At least 10 persons were injuried in a fierce clash between two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Comilla University unit on Friday.
Police said, the clash began near the Kotbari Government Laboratory School over establishing supremacy in the varsity when they were welcoming the new admission seekers.
Of the injured, one BCL activist named Majed Mia was admitted to Comilla Medical College Hospital in a critical condition. Other injured were treated in different hospitals in Sadar upazila.
Meanwhile, the guardians and the admission aspirants who thronged there to sit for the first year honours examination at the university were seen desperately moving here and there to get a shelter.
Witnesses said the clash ensued around 10:00am between the supporters of varsity unit BCL General Secretary Illias Hossain and varsity unit President Nazmul Hassan Alif following an altercation over exchanging greetings with the students, who went there to sit for the
first year honours admission test. The BCL activists from Elias group and Oli group took position in front of various examination halls in the morning to welcome the admission seekers. Ten persons were injured during the chase and counter chase.
Being informed police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Proctor of Comilla University Professor Mohammad Ainul Hoque said, ‘The clash ensued when the BCL activists started gathering on the Kotbari Road. Several students including Joint General Secretary of BCL varsity unit Rezaul Islam Mazed were injured in the clash.’
When asked, Deputy Registrar of Comilla University Dalilur Rahman said, ‘The examination was held on time despite clashes there.’
Interestingly, the varsity BCL president and general secretary have blamed each other for the incident.
‘If anyone wants to stay in BCL, he must be a student. But Alif conducted attack on us with the support of outsiders. Two students received injuries in the attack,’ said Illias Hossain.
But refuting the claim, Nazmul Hassan Alif said, ‘Ilias group attacked us all a sudden. Six of our activists were injured at that time.’
