BCL bars JL from dropping tender worth Tk 22 cr at Barisal LGED

Atleast four activists were injured over dropping tender worth Tk 21.9 cr at Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) in Barisal on Thursday noon after Bangladesh Chhatra League cadres beat Awami Jubo League activists.
Ruhul Amin, Executive Engineer, LGED Barisal office said , the tenders under eight packages for developing rural infrastructures of road, hat-bazaar and union parishad in five upazilas of Barisal district were called on September 28 and Thursday was the last date of submitting tenders.
Asian Development Bank under Coastal Climate Resilient Infrastructures (CCRIP) with Bangladesh Government funding the project and tenders formalities done under open tendering method (OTM) of Public Procurement Rules (PPR), the LGED official added.
After visiting the spot and talking with witnesses, officials and stake holders it was learnt that BCL cadres led by city president Jasimuddin and secretary Asim Dewan on Thursday morning cordoned the contractors at a room in the LGED Barisal and pressed them for negotiations.
The city BCL cadres were followers of Abul Hasanat Abdullah, district AL president, lawmaker and parliamentary standing committee chairman over LGD affairs, while the others mostly JL activists and followers of local AL lawmaker Jebunnesa Afroj backed by industry minister Amir Hossain Amu backed.
However, the JL activist contractors denied negotiating with BCL activists.
Then the BCL activists injured JL activists by beating and barring from dropping tender chased them away from the LGED office premises.
Saiful Islam Titu, Kabir Hossain, Faruk Hossain, members of city JL and Arifur Rahman Chunnu, BCL activist of Bakerganj upazila BCL, were injured by the beating of BCL cadres.
They later treated at local dispensaries.
The law enforcers on duty at LGED office remained indifferent during the BCL attack, alleged injured JL activists Titu and Kabir.
A member of police told the journalists that they remained inactive as they were assigned only to protect the tender box, not to protect the contractors who willing to drop tenders in the box.
Jasimuddin, City BCL President, denying any attack and baring any body from dropping tenders, claimed they only tried to hold negotiation-talk over distribution of some tender works.
Ruhul Amin, executive engineer of Barisal LGED, said he received no allegation against baring any body from dropping tender.
However, he acknowledged that he called forces from RAB and Police after hearing some hue and cry outside his office room.
