Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Nepal (BBIN) have planned to work together to enforce a joint vigil against terrorist activities using cyber space, state minister for posts and telecommunications Tarana Halim said.
“Online is the key platform to transform fundamentalism and radicalism towards global terrorism that’s why BBIN is mulling to work together like other sectors,” she told The New Nation in an interview earlier this week.
Tarana said Bangladesh proposed the initiative while she initially talked with authorities India and Bhutan to launch a joint vigil against use of cyber space for terrorist activities.
She said Dhaka would also talk with Nepal on the matter and then BBIN was expected to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) towards that end.
“Bangladesh is looking for establishing regional cooperation to combat cyber crimes and militancy as the global community termed the terrorism as global threat,” she said. Tarana said it was a message for those who were involved with carrying out evil activities using online platform.
The state minister visited India at the last week of July and then toured to Bhutan on August 1-2 to discuss Bangladeshi bandwidth export and mutual cooperation in telecommunication sector.
Officials said a process to establish a South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC)-based satellite was already underway and Bangladesh initially gave consent for it.
Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) Chairman Dr Shahjahan Mahmood visited India earlier this month to take part at a regional discussion on SAARC satellite.
Tarana, however, said Bangladesh gave its consent for the satellite, but “our priority is our own satellite “Bangabandhu-I”.
“We never compromise with any move that could hamper the service, business and redundancy of our own satellite,” she added.
