Bangladesh Under-19 Cricket team finished third in the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup beating Sri Lanka Under-19 Cricket team by three wickets in the third place play-off match at the Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium in Fatullah on Saturday.
Chasing Sri Lanka’s fighting total of 214 off 48.5 overs, the Junior Tigers reached the winning target making 218 for the loss of seven wickets when they had just three balls to spare.
Bangladesh had a shaky start as they lost opener Zakir Hasan (0) when Bangladesh’s score was just one.
One-down Jaker Ali and opener Joyraz Sheikh repaired the early damage contributing together 48 runs for the second wicket stand before Jaker Ali was retired hurt when Bangladesh’s score was 49 for the loss of one wicket.
Then opener Joyraz Sheikh (26) was caught at the mid-wicket by MS Pereira off BA Silva when Bangladesh’s score was 59 for the loss of two wickets.
After dismissal of Sheikh, Nazmul Hossain Shanto and Mahedi Hasan Miraz built a worthy partnership. They put on together 88 runs for the fourth wicket partnership before Mehedi Hasan Miraz was run out when the hosts’ total was 147 for the loss of three wickets.
Miraz hit a captain’s knock of 53 from 66 balls featuring two fours and a sixer. Earlier, Miraz grabbed three wickets at the cost of 28 runs. Miraz was adjudged the Man of the Match for his all-round performance.
After dismissal of Miraz, Nazmul Hossain Shanto was the another victim of run out. He made a polished 40 from 57 balls.
Later, Bangladeshi youngsters failed to build any notable partnership.
At one stage Bangladesh needed one run to win from four deliveries. Jaker Ali hit a superb four to overhaul the winning target remaining just three balls.
Jaker Ali remained unbeaten with 31 from 45 balls hitting five fours.
S Ashan was the peak of Lankan bowlers. He got two wickets conceding 39 runs.
Earlier, Sri Lanka made a solid start as PH Mendis and MS Pereira, the two openers of Sri Lanka contributed together 60 runs before Pereira was stumped out by Jaker Ali off Miraz.
Later, second-down KI Asalanka and S Ashan added together 39 runs for the fourth wicket partnership before Ashan was stumped out by Jaker Ali off Mahedi Hasan Rana when Sri Lanka’s was 109 for the loss of four wickets.
Asalanka and PWH de Silva built another notable partnership. They added together 55 runs for the sixth wicket partnership before PWH de Silva was bowled out by Mohammad Saifuddin when Sri Lanka’s total was 186 for the loss of six wickets.
Asalanka top-scored with 76. His 99-ball knock was laced with six fours and a six. He was caught at the long-on by Zakir Hasan off Abdul Halim when Sri Lanka’s score was 214 for the loss of nine wickets.
MS Pereira and PWH de Silva added to 34 and 30 runs respectively to the islanders’ total.
Abdul Halim and Mohammad Sifuddin bagged a pair of wickets each instead of 26 and 48 runs respectively.
Besides, Saleh Ahmed Shaon and Mahedi Hasan Rana took one wicket apiece.
