Five more people have died from the coronavirus infection while 552 cases were detected in the last 24 hours, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said on Saturday.
With the new cases the death toll now stands at 175, said Professor Dr Nasima Sultana, Additional Director General (Administration) of DGHS, in a press briefing in Dhaka.
The tally of infections reached 8,790 in the country so far.
Of the latest fatalities, three men and two women, were all recorded in Dhaka, according to the DGHS.
Dr. Sultana said that 5,827 people were tested in the past 24 hours and among them 552 people found positive for the virus.
Bangladesh passed the 55th day since its first case reported in Narayanganj.
On March 8, the country confirmed its first case of COVID-19 and the first death on March 18.
The infections increased in recent days as the number of tests increased.
A month earlier on April 1, the number of infections was three only.
Globally, over 3.34 million people have been infected by the novel coronavirus and 238,796 have died, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.
Infections have been reported in more than 210 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in China in December 2019.
