One killed in Fakirhat road mishap
A trolley driver was killed on the spot when his trolley collided head on with a speeding passenger bus bound for Khulna on Khulna-Mongla Highway at Khajura under Fakirhat Upazila in Bagerhat district on Wednesday morning. The deceased was identified as Rasel Shaikh, son of one Shahjahan Shaikh of village Naihati under Rupsa Upazila in Khulna district.
It is learnt from the locals that in the morning the trolley laden with brick was going from Rupsa to else where and when it reached the place of occurrence it collided head on with the passenger bus that was coming from the opposite direction. As a result, trolley driver was fatally injured and died instantly. Police of Katakahi PS seized the killer bus. But its driver managed to escape.
Crab, fish fries seized
Huge quantities of fries of crabs, Faisha fish and other fries caught from Sundarban forest illegally were seized by the coastguards on Wednesday from the different places of the forest. The seized crab and fish fries were released in the rivers and canals of the forest.
M H I Siddique, Operation Officer of the coastguards of the Western Zone deployed Mongla told, defying the ban imposing on catching of crab and fish fries a good number of dishonest fishermen are catching the fries from the different places of the forest. In order to stop this evil efforts the members of the coastguards raided the forest repeatedly during the last week and seized 2 lakh 9 hundred 50 kgs fries of crabs, 1 lakh 70 thousand Faisha fries, 1 lakh shrimp fries, 5 hundred traps for catching crab fries and 23 boats. Market price of them is Tk.15 crores. On the other hand, 83 arrested fishermen involved in illegal catching of fries of crab, fish and shrimp were released after they were warned not to catch those fires once again.
Mothers’ gathering held in Shigrai Pry School premises
Under the auspices of SANAC (Sachetan Nagarik Committee), Bagerhat with the assistance of TIB (Transparency International Bangladesh) a gathering of mothers was held in Shigrai Govt. Free Primary School premises under Sadar Upazila in Bagerhat district on Thursday morning Swith Imrul Hossain, President of the SMC (School Managing Committee) in the chair in order to raise the standard of teaching in the school and to create awareness among the mothers about education of their children and to remove the distance or gap between the teachers and their students’ mothers. It was addressed among others by Prof. Chowdhury Abdur Rob, President of SANC, Bagerhat, Provat Haldar, ATEO (Assistant Thana Education Officer), Bagerhat, Shaikh Bashir Ahmed, TIB Area Manager, Bagerhat, Shewli Begum, Convener of the mothers’ forum.
Old man burnt to death in Fakirhat
An old man named Santos Kumar Das (70) of village Shyambagat within Piljanga Union under Fakirhat Upazila in Bagerhat district met his tragic end when he was warming himself by fire. It is reported that recently the ill-fated old man was caught by severe biting of cold and in order to worm himself he made a fire with wood in his house yard. But at one stage when he was baking in the fire his wearing, some how, caught the fire without his knowledge and within moments the fire engulfed his whole body. Then he cried out in fear. On hearing his cry the other inmates of the house rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire. But in spit of that the man sustained fatal burn injuries on his person. He was immediately admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital where he expired on Thursday after fighting with death for long 2 days.
RU pol science dept chairman resigns amid protests

Professor Nasima Zaman, chairman of Rajshahi University political science department has submitted her resignation letter to the university vice chancellor on Sunday amid protests of the teachers and students.
Professor Ruhul Amin, general secretary of RU teachers Association and also a Professor of the department told New Nation that Professor Nasima Zaman submitted her resignation letter to the university vice chancellor Professor M Abdus Sobhan on Sunday noon showing her personal reasons.
“She will be replaced by another teacher on February 1”, he also added.
Earlier on morning, a faction of teachers of the department kept the room of the chairman under key and lock demanding resignation of her from post.
Later, the students of the department also expressed their solidarity with the teachers and started demonstration seizing the department chair in the seminar room.
