State Minister for Textile and Jute Mirja Azam, MP, has asked the officials and others concerned of Bangladesh Sericulture Development Board (BSDB) to put in their best efforts to revitalize the traditional silk sector to regain its heritage as early as possible.
He viewed that the Rajshahi region and the country as well is proud about the Rajshahi silk. He said, “We have obligation to protect the sector from further degradation. The officials concerned should devise ways and means on how to revive the sector.”
Azam made this observation while sharing views with the officers BSDB and its CBA leaders at the BSDB headquarter separately in Rajshahi city today.
The minister expressed his wholeheartedness to revitalize the silk sector to uphold its glorious heritage.
BSDB Director General Swapan Chandra Pal and Director of Bangladesh Sericulture Research Training Institute (BSRTI) Jamal Uddin Shah briefed the state minister about their respective activities, present position and further development plans.
State Minister Azam said: “We need to survive the prestigious silk sector. We have to devise ways and means on how to make it possible. All the authorities concerned should extend full-length support towards the government in this regard.”
Responding to the demands raised by the BSDB and CBA leaders he said the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is always in favour of this prestigious sector. He added that necessary measures will be taken to reopen the two now (defunct) BSDB’s silk factories.
He said the sericulture together with its industrial side involves a huge number of people, who depends on agriculture as an agro-based and labour-intensive industry.
