Many farmers in Sylhet Division are engaged in cultivating of Aus paddy.
A programme was earlier taken up for bringing 138,939 hectares of land for the crops farming during the current Kharif-1 season, official sources informed. It is about 4.0 per cent more than the last year’s farming area on 134,025 hectares.
Deputy Director of DAE, Sylhet Divisional office, Dr Mamun -Ur -Rashid said, already 108,230 hectares of land had so far been brought under farming with a favourable weather condition coupled with rains and sunshine. The target may exceed this year.
Of the targeted area, 48,660 hectares would be in Sylhet, 44,070 hectares in Moulvibazar and 39,536 hectares in Habiganj and 6,673 hectares would be in Sunamganj.
The farmers in the region prefer high yielding varieties like BR-2, BR-3, BR-4, BR-12, BRI-27, BRI-42, BRI-43, BRI-48 and BAU-63. The farming would continue till end of June while the farmers get crop in 90 days to 100 from the transplantation, officials informed.
Of the total, hybrid Aus varieties would be cultivated on 150 hectares while 135,682 hectares would be under the different high yielding varieties and the local varieties would be cultivated on 3107 hectares, the official added.
Under the targeted programme, 361,480 tonnes of rice would be produced in the division against the last year’s 349,233 tonnes. This year’s production target includes, 119,800 tonnes in Sylhet, 118,794 tonnes in Moulvibazar, 106,406 tonnes in Habiganj and 16480 tonnes in Sunamganj.
Meanwhile, the incentive programme for 25,700 selected farmers in 234 unions under 28 upazilas of Sylhet, Moulvibazar and Habiganj districts, taken up for this season was .completed at the beginning. They were given HYV seeds and fertilisers and other expenses worth totalling Tk 345,66,500.
Moreover, 2700 farmers were given Nerika variety seeds and 40 kgs of fertilisers for one bigha land each. Nerika paddy farming incentive programme would cost another Tk 52,11,000. Things are being monitored at upazila level committees also, officials added.
Under the programme, each of the farmers was supplied with 10 kg seed of HYV or Nerika varieties of Aus paddy in addition to 40 kg fertilisers for one bigha land, he added.
