A two-day international seminar on Role of SAI (Supreme Audit Institution) as an Institution of Accountability” has begun here on Monday with the participation of ten Asian countries who would share views on optimizing the role of their respective SIA in keeping authentic public accounts audits.
Organised by Office of the Comptroller and Auditors General (OCAG) of Bangladesh is hosting the seminar where Auditor Generals of Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan and the Philippines are taking part in the seminar. High officials of Auditor General’s office of India, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Maldives are also attending the seminar.
The participating 10 countries delegates will present their respective country paper in six separate business sessions.
The Parliamentary Committee on Public Undertakings Chairman Shawkat Ali inaugurated the seminar as the chief guest while CAG Masud Ahmend was in the chair.
Shawkat Ali said “The quality of audit report has a great bearing on the follow-up and implementation of audit recommendations by the executives. As Parliamentarians, we are also interested to see quality audit reports that we can make use of.”
He also added that the auditing in an IT environment is in line with the present government’s dream to have digital Bangladesh by 2021 when the country would complete 50 years of independence.
Shawkat Ali expressed the hope that the seminar would help the general and Bangladesh government auditors and also foreign delegates to share their experience.
CAG Masud Ahmed said the audit department is playing a vital role to stop abuse of public money and bring back to the public exchequer the money spent in an irregular way.
Director of Governance Global Practice, World Bank Samia Msadek and Strengthening Public Expenditure Management Programme (SPEMP-B) Project Director M Zahurul Islam also spoke on the occasion.
