The 47th Independence and National Day was celebrated today in the port city as elsewhere in the district with renewed pledges to move the country forward side by side upholding the spirit of the liberation war.
Local administration, different political parties and its associated bodies, educational institutions, professional and trade bodies and socio-cultural organisations observed the day through daylong programmes.
The district administration chalked out elaborate programmes to observe the day in a befitting manner.
The day’s programmes were began through heralding 31-gun salutes on the premises of the court building at 12.01 am followed by playing of whistles simultaneously from rails, steamers and vessels of the port.
The programmes included placing of wreaths at Shaheed Minar, hoisting national flag atop all of the government, semi- government, private and public buildings, educational and other institutions and organisations, holding discussion meetings, lighting of candle in memory of the martyred freedom fighters, playing of recorded historic speech of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on the 7th March, 1971, bringing out processions and holding cultural functions, march pasts and physical displays, and reception to Freedom Fighters.
Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Nurul Islam, BSc, first placed wreaths at Shaheed Minar in the city as State Minister for land Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Jabed, Chittagong Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin and Chittagong Zilla Parishad chairman M A Salam placed wreaths on behalf of their respective organisations. Chittagong City Awami League (AL) led by its President and former city mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury and General Secretary AJM Nasir Uddin, Divisional Commissioner of Chittagong Ruhul Amain, Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP).

On the occasion, Special prayers were offered at mosques, temples, churches and other places of worship seeking peace and progress of the country. A film on Liberation War was screened and accorded reception to the freedom fighters and the family members of the martyred freedom fighters at Parade ground in Chawkbazar of the city.

On the occasion, Special prayers were offered at mosques, temples, churches and other places of worship seeking peace and progress of the country.
A film on Liberation War was screened and accorded reception to the freedom fighters and the family members of the martyred freedom fighters at Parade ground in Chawkbazar of the city.
Besides, an combine march past by police, Ansar, VDP personnel, Fire Service, BNCC, Girl Guide, Scouts and children and juveniles from different educational institutions was held at Parade ground in the city’s Chawkbazar area.
CU Correspondent adds: Chittagong University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Iftekhar Uddin Chowdhury argued the students and teachers to prevent evil forces who are trying to backlash the country.
He also said, we people from all strata today have to stand against the terrorism and radicalism to protect and remain secure the independence.
The call came with a discussion meeting held at Bangabadhu Chattar, Chittagong University onc Sunday.
With acting registrar Dr Kamrul Huda in Chair, the discussion meeting was also addressed by CU proctor Ali Azgor Chowdhury, dean of Arts and Humanities Dr Sikandar Chwodhury, teachers’s association’s president Dr A F M Awrengojeb, general secretary Sukanto Bhattacharwa, Dr Sultan Ahmed among others.
Earlier, the students, teachers, officials and employees placed wreathes to the monument of the martyrs to mark up the Independence Day. Several cultural organizations hold cultural programs, brought out colorful processions to mark up the day.
