Ekushey February, the language martyrs and international mother language day was observed with due respect in Barishal on Thursday.
Thousands of barefooted people including minister, state minister, BCC Mayor, lawmakers, high officials of the divisional, district, police administration, Barisal Reporters Unity, leaders and representatives of more than 350 socio-cultural-political-educational -religious, government and non government, voluntary organizations wearing black badges paid tribute to the martyrs of the language movement of 1952 by placing wreaths at the alter of the Central Shaheed Minar of the city from Thursday early hours to late morning.
Black and half mast national flags were hoisted on every house-top.
Barishal Reporters Unity organised a two-day long exhibition on books, photos, documents on history and development of Bangla language, movement for state language, copies of rare Bangla books, books of prominent local writers including Bijoy Gupta, Jibanananda Das etc. at Central Shaheed Minar of the city inaugurated by Ajiar Rahman, deputy commissioner of Barisal on Wednesday.
District administration also organized an week long book fair from Thursday at the same premises participated by book sellers and publishers of the city.
Discussion meetings, cultural functions, painting, hand writing competitions, were held by different organizations including district and divisional administration, Charukala Barishal, Shishu Academy throughout the day on this occasion.
On this occasion four-day long programs of discussion meetings, recitations, cultural functions, dramas were held at Barisal Central Shaheed Minar, organized by Barishal Sangskritik Sangothan Samonnya Parishad, an alliance of 26 cultural organizations of the city, and hundreds of spectators enjoyed the programs from every afternoon to late night.
Special prayers were held at different religious prayer places and organizations for the blessings of the departed souls of the martyrs of the language movement and liberation war and welfare of the country and nation.
