Ekushey February, the language martyrs and international mother language day was observed with due respect in Barishal on Thursday.
Thousands of barefooted people including minister, state minister, BCC Mayor, lawmakers, high officials of the divisional, district, police administration, Barisal Reporters Unity, leaders and representatives of more than 350 socio-cultural-political-educational -religious, government and non government, voluntary organizations wearing black badges paid tribute to the martyrs of the language movement of 1952 by placing wreaths at the alter of the Central Shaheed Minar of the city from Thursday early hours to late morning.
Black and half mast national flags were hoisted on every house-top.
Barishal Reporters Unity organised a two-day long exhibition on books, photos, documents on history and development of Bangla language, movement for state language, copies of rare Bangla books, books of prominent local writers including Bijoy Gupta, Jibanananda Das etc. at Central Shaheed Minar of the city inaugurated by Ajiar Rahman, deputy commissioner of Barisal on Wednesday.
District administration also organized an week long book fair from Thursday at the same premises participated by book sellers and publishers of the city.
Discussion meetings, cultural functions, painting, hand writing competitions, were held by different organizations including district and divisional administration, Charukala Barishal, Shishu Academy throughout the day on this occasion.
On this occasion four-day long programs of discussion meetings, recitations, cultural functions, dramas were held at Barisal Central Shaheed Minar, organized by Barishal Sangskritik Sangothan Samonnya Parishad, an alliance of 26 cultural organizations of the city, and hundreds of spectators enjoyed the programs from every afternoon to late night.
Special prayers were held at different religious prayer places and organizations for the blessings of the departed souls of the martyrs of the language movement and liberation war and welfare of the country and nation.

In Khulna city, the functions began at one minute past after midnight on February 21 when the State Minister for Labor and Employment Begum Monnuzan Sufian, MP, placed floral wreaths at Shaheed Minar of city’s Shaheed Hadis Park to pay due respect to the language movement martyrs.
Later, KCC Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque, Muktijoddha Sangsad, Divisional Commissioner Md Lokman Hossain Mia, Khulna Metropolitan Police Commissioner (Acting) Sardar Rokibul Islam, DIG of Khulna Range Didar Ahmed placed wreaths there.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Khulna Mohammad Helal Hossain along with officials of the district and Upazila administration also placed floral wreaths at Shahid Hadis Park.
Bangladesh Awami League (AL) and its front organizations and other political parties, socio-cultural and professional organizations and common people also paid homage to the language movement martyrs by placing floral wreaths at the Shaheed Minar.

The programs included by hoisting of national flag at half-mast atop all buildings, educational institutions, ‘Probhat Ferries (Dawn Rallies), decoration of the streets with miniature, national and colored flags inscribed with Bengali alphabets.
Different competitions for the children on drawing, essay writing, rendering patriotic songs and sports competitions for the school students were also arranged along with screening of documentary films marking the day.

The meeting was followed by a musical soiree based-on patriotic songs.
Special prayers were offered at all the mosques, temples, churches and other places of worships across the district seeking divine blessings for peace and salvation of the departed souls of the language martyrs.
