Aman harvest begins, smile on farmers’ lips

Paddy harvest in the Aman season began on in full swing in the Nilphamari district with starting of Nobanno festival.
Nobanno, the harvest festival is usually celebrated on the first day of the Bangla month of Agrahayan,(Mid November to Mid December). In many areas of Nilphamari district, there is a rush to harvest aman paddy in advance.
 The hard work of the farmers and the favorable weather has made the potential of aman yield bright this year.
 A smile appeared on the lips of the farmers as prices are good this time as newly harvested swarna paddy was being sold at above Tk 900 a maund (40 kg).
There is a hint of winter in the horizon. The cold wind has been blowing from the north for the last few days. The stalk of winter enlightens the heart and soul of the farmers. Winter fog is helping the paddy to thrive.
The paddy of Ropa Aman which drumps a little later has also brought life to the paddy in this winter fog.
The rice inside the paddy is helping to harden and the fear of insects has also been alleviated, the farmers said.
Several areas of the district have been visited and the farmers are busy in harvesting Aman paddy. Intoxicated with the joy of reaping the harvest of misery at home.
Farmers have already planted about 15-20 percent aman in the house.
Aman will be fully to home by December, said Sub Assistant Agriculture Officers Md. Shanarul Islam and Md. Rashidul Islam.
He said the district agriculture department has provided all kinds of advice to the farmers in aman cultivation. As a result, we are able to bring home the expected crop.
Manoranjan Dev Sharma, a farmer from Angarpara village in Kundapukur Union, said that although farmers are interested in cultivating aman, many are turning away from farming due to high prices of fertilizers, pesticides and increased wages of agricultural laborers. Local paddy traders Md. Shahinur Islam, Jahedul Islam and Md. Kamruzzaman Kamruz said that paddy has just started to hit village market.
