20 lakh doses to arrive Bangladesh from India as gift Wednesday

The authorities have taken all-out preparations to rollout Covid-19 vaccine inoculation drive across the country.
The herculean task of vaccinating Bangladeshi population against coronavirus will begin as soon as doses arrive from India, officials said.
Bangladesh will get a total of 3.0 crore doses of the Oxford vaccine from the Indian company -Serum Institute – in six phases as part of a tripartite agreement.
 “We will set up a total 7,344 vaccination centres around the country,” said Md Shamsul Haque, Line Director (Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health Programmes) of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
He said DGHS will set up vaccination centres at union parishads, upazila’s health complexes, district or Sadar hospital, public and private medical college hospital, specialised hospitals, police hospitals, BGB Hospitals, combined military hospitals and chest disease hospital.
“People need to complete online registration to get vaccinated. Upon registration, vaccine-recipients will get a COVID-19 vaccination card,” he added.
Md Shamsul Haque further said corona vaccine will not be given to anyone below the age of 18. Besides, pregnant mothers will not get the dose against Covid-19.
“We have already completed the preparation for vaccinating our population. It will be launched as soon as doses arrive from India,” he noted.
Health Ministry officials said yesterday that 20 lakh doses of the Covid-19 vaccine will arrive in Bangladesh from India as gift on Wednesday.

Bangladesh from India,” DG Health Dr Abul Bashar Mohammad Khurshid Alam said on Monday.
He said the Indian government sent a letter to Bangladesh regarding the gift of vaccines.
Health ministry officials said India’s Ministry of External Affairs got in touch with the foreign ministry to send the doses. The high commission also sent a letter on Monday.
Health Minister Zahid Maleque said the first shipment of AstraZeneca-Oxford virus vaccine manufactured by Serum Institute of India (SII) will arrive in the country on January 25-26.
The government has already trained around 42,000 healthcare workers and volunteers across the country to start Covid vaccination from the first week of February. They will work in more than 7,000 teams the minister told this on Monday at a ‘Meet the Reporters’ event organised by Dhaka Reporters’ Unity in the capital.

“The Indian government will also send some Covid-19 vaccines as gift. The number has not been decided yet,” Zahid Maleque said.
The government will inoculate in phases nearly 14 crore people against Covid-19 with double-dose vaccine from the COVAX facility under a Tk 6,786 crore pandemic preparedness project.
