AL violating constitution, alleges BNP

UNB, Dhaka :
BNP on Monday alleged that though the government often talks about constitution, it has long been violating it by snatching political parties’ right to holding public rallies.
“The constitution has enshrined equal rights of all parties to hold public rallies, but you (govt) are violating it. You have locked up the constitutional rights in Baksali cage,” said BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
Speaking at a press conference at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office, he further said,
“The government is using the constitution only for protecting its own interests.”
The BNP leader urged the government to hold the next polls under a neutral government by amending the constitution to restore people’s all rights, shunning its ‘obstinacy’.
He said, though the ruling party leaders are carrying out election campaign across the country, BNP and its alliance partners are not being allowed to do so.
Rizvi said the Election Commission should ensure a level-playing field for all parties from right now. “It’s the duty of the Commission to create equal scopes for all parties. The Commission won’t be able to ensure the level-playing field three months before the election, if it doesn’t take step to this end from now on.”
He came down hard on Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda for his comment that a fair election is possible under the current government. “You’ve made such a remark as you’ve sold your soul to Awami League. You’re now working as a weapon of the voter-less government.”
Rizvi also criticised Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader for his comment that BNP senior vice chairman has no courage to do politics by facing the cases filed against him saying, “If you’re so brave, hold the next polls under a neutral government.”
He alleged that government has been trying to eliminate opposition parties from the country by resorting to repressive acts.
Rizvi also accused the government of using law enforcers as its cadres to implement its blueprint.
He said the ruling party ‘cadres’ and law enforcers kept attacking BNP leaders and activists and obstructing their organisational activities, including the party’s member collection campaign, at different parts of the country.
