A leader of ruling Awami League received serious injuries when members of his rival group shot him in the legs from point blank range over sharing of garbage collection money in the city’s Mugda area on Tuesday late night.
The victim was identified as Shahfiqul Islam Sardar, 50, who is general secretary of Ward No-7 unit of AL. He came under the attack of assailants in front of ward councilor Abdul Basit Khan’s office at a stage of altercation with his opponents.
He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where the doctors conducted an operation to bring out the bullets from his legs on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, brother of victim Abu Bakar Siddique said, “The reasons behind the gun attack were sharing of money that comes from garbage collection and drug trading.
Abu Bakar Siddique also claimed that he was present during the shootout. “Getting phone call from Basit, my brother [Shahfiqul Islam Sardar] came out of his house at about 10:00pm.
The assailants shot his both legs, two bullets in each, when he was boarding a richshaw after finishing conversation with Basit.”
Family members of victim filed a case with Mugda Police Station accusing several ruling party men including councilor Basit Khan.
On the other hand, Basit Khan claimed himself as vice-president of AL Sabujbagh Thana Unit, alleged that Shafiqul extorted Tk 8,000 per month from the domestic garbage collectors.
Recently, he demanded Tk 40,000 from them which triggered a conflict between the two sides.
When contacted, Officer-in-Charge of Mugda Police Station Omar Faruk said, ” We are trying to nab the culprits involved in the incident of shooting.”
