The leaders of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) on Wednesday alleged that Attorney General Mahbubey Alam had made his office a political office. This is very unfortunate.
They said this at a press conference in the SCBA auditorium. President of the Bar Advocate Zainul Abedin read a written statement in the conference. Bar Secretary A M Mahbub Uddin Khokan and other executive members were present on the occasion.
“People of the country hope that the law officers will work for the rule of law and human rights and handle Constitutional framework properly. But Attorney General’s (AG) activities are ultra vires of the Constitution. He (AG) is delivering political sermons repeatedly from his office to destroy the Judiciary,” read the written statement.
The SCBA leaders also said, “The AG said if the Chief Justice returns to the Appellate Division, it will be contemptuous. We want to say that AG’s statement about the Chief Justice is contemptuous.”
“Chief Justice of Bangladesh is performing his duty with oath. The government sent him on leave forcefully though he is physically fit. He said in a open letter before leaving the country that he was not sick and he would return. We think, he is the Chief Justice of Bangladesh till his resignation or retirement, whereas he stays. Attorney General cannot go against the Constitution and the Chief Justice of Bangladesh. So his (AG) statement is contrary to the Judiciary,” also read the statement.
Meanwhile, a day before, the Attorney General said in a press conference that the leaders of the SCBA are backed by a political party.
