Blogger Rajib killing: Accused Sadman asked to surrender

The Supreme Court on Wednesday overruled a High Court order that granted bail to Sadman Yasir Mahmud, an accused in the blogger Ahmed Rajib Haider killing case.
Following a petition filed by the state, Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division Justice Hasan Foez Siddique also asked him to surrender before the trial court within two weeks.
Passing the order, the judge sent the matter to the regular bench of the Appellate Division for next hearing on June 16.
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam and Deputy Attorney General Khorshedul Alam represented the state while Khandaker Mahbub Hossain stood for Sadman.
Following a petition, an HC bench on June 1 granted interim bail for six months to Sadman in the killing case. He was released from jail on bail on June 5.
Rajib, known as ‘Thaba Baba’ (Father of Claw) in the blogger community, who also an active activist of Shahbagh movement, was hacked to death in front of his house at Palashnagar in the capital’s Mirpur on February 15, 2013. His father Nazim Uddin filed a case in this connection.
On January 28, 2014, police pressed charges against eight people, including Mufti M Jasimuddin Rahmani, chief of the banned Islamist outfit Ansar Ullah Bangla Team, and Sadman, in the case.
The other charge-sheeted accused are Faisal Bin Nayeem alias Dwip, Maksudul Hasan alias Anik, Mohammad Ehsan Reza alias Rumman, Nayeem Sikder alias Irad, Nafiz Imtiaz and Redwanul Azad alias Rana.
Sadman was arrested from Dhanmondi area on August 14 last year. Later, he gave a confessional statement before a Dhaka court.
