ACC receives affidavit of ex-minister

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Monday received the affidavit of former State Minister for Social Welfare Mozammel Hossain, Member of Parliament (MP) from Bagerhat-4 Constituency which he submitted to the Election Commission (EC) at the time of filing nomination paper in 2013, ACC sources said.
The EC sent the affidavit of Hossain to the ACC on Monday as per the anti-graft body’s recommendation.
On April 16 the ACC asked for the affidavit of Hossain from the EC on receipt of information that he has amassed huge wealth disproportionate to his known sources of income, the source said.
The wealth of Mozammel Hossain has increased 100 times in the last five years, according to his wealth statement submitted to the EC in 2013 on the eve of 10th parliamentary polls held on January 5 in 2014.
Mozammel Hossain did not mention in his statement in the affidavit a house worth Tk five crore in his wife’s name at Amlapara in Bagerhat and another house worth Tk 10 crore at Nirala in Khulna. Besides, he also did not mention some luxury cars which his family owns, Tk one crore in his wife’s account in a bank and two multi-storied buildings worth Tk 15 crore in the name of his son Dr Mahmud Hossain.
It is also alleged that Hossain provided jobs to about 500 people in different government departments through abuse of power in exchange of good amount of money from them. It is further alleged that people who were in managing committees in 15 educational institutions in his electoral area, had to grease his palms.
He used to take money from different projects such as the test relief work , food for work and one house one firm project, it is alleged. His son used to take money from construction companies for giving them work , it is also alleged.
