A nor’wester lashed different villages of the Kishoreganj and Mymensingh districts killing at least eight people and injuring 50 others in the small hours of Sunday night.
Five people were killed in Kishorganj while three in Mymensingh.
Besides, the nor’wester damaged a large number of houses and uprooted hundreds of trees and disrupted power supply in the districts.
The victims are Hazrat Ali, 35, and his son Lijon, 10, Shitol Bormon, 45, Abdul Mannan and Rita Begum, 12 of Kishoreganj district and Abdul Karim, Jalal Uddin Bhutto and Iliyas Ali of Mymensingh.
 ” The nor’wester began at 12.30 am on Sunday and continued for one hour. Many villages of Kishoreganj district experienced power outage when nor’wester swept the town,” SM Alam, Deputy Commissioner of Kishoreganj district told The New Nation on Sunday.
Apart from these, road communication from Kishoreganj to other districts came to a halt as hundreds of roadside trees fell down on the highways.
He said the nor’wester battered four upazilas-Pakundia, Bazitpur, Kotiadi and Kishoreganj Sadar damaging many schools and madrasas.
Officer-in-charge of Pakundia police station Hassan Al Mamun said Hazrat and his son Lijon died on the spot when a tree fell on their tin-shed house during the nor’wester in Jangalia village.
 “Shitol and Abdul were also killed when tree fell on them during the storm,” he said, adding Rita died when a branch of a tree fell on her at night.
In Mymensingh, according to an official of Fulbaria police station Abdul Karim died and five others were injured when a tree fell on a shop at Radha Kanai Bazar at night.
Jalal was killed and 10 others were injured when a tree fell on them in Shontoshpur area under Muktagachha upazila in the district.
Besides, one Iliyas Ali died in thunderstorm in Baliapara village under Trishal upazila.
Meanwhile the Met office forecast that rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind is likely to occur at a few places over Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions and at one or two places over Rajshahi, Rangpur, Khulna and Barisal divisions.
