A court here on Thursday sentenced eight people to life term imprisonment and eight others to seven years imprisonment for killing two brothers in Kaliakoir upazila in Gazipur district in 2000.
The court fined the eight lifers-Nurul Islam, Nazrul Islam, Abdul Ali (absconding), Fazlul Haque, Zakir Hossain, Hasen Ali, Hazrat Ali and Rahmat Ali Sikdar-Tk 20, 000 each, in default, to suffer one more year rigorous imprisonment.
The court also fined the eight other convicts-Bahadur, Sujon, Chan Ali, Shahidul Islam, Bujrat Ali, Akbar, Amzad and Azizul-Tk 5,000 each, in default, to
suffer six months more RI.
According to persecution, Makbul Dewan and his brother Kalim Uddin Dewan were killed and their another brother Eklas Dewan and his three sons injured in an attack by rivals over land dispute at Golachipa in Kaliakoir upazila on December 6, 2000.
A day after the incident, Shakhawat Hossain Dewan, brother of the victims, filed a case against 19 people with Kaliakoir Police Station. Later, police submitted a charge sheet against 21 people after investigation. Charge was framed against the accused on July 15, 2003.
On January 5, 2012, the case was transferred to Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 from Gazipur court.
After examining the records and witnesses, Judge ABM Nizamul Haque of the tribunal handed down the verdict acquitting five other accused.
