A total of 63 companies were awarded the National Export Trophies for their contribution and performance in the country’s export earnings as well as other compliance issues for fiscal 2014-15 year.
Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed on Sunday handed over the gold, bronze and silver trophies to the recipients at a ceremony as chief guest in city’s Osmani Memorial Auditorium organized by the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB).
This year, 29 gold, 20 silver and 14 bronze trophies were given in different categories and services.
Speaking on the occasion, Tofail Ahmed said the export trophies are given for the outstanding contribution in country’s export and other compliance issues but exporters of export processing zones (EPZs) were deprived of the award. “In future the exporters of EPZs will get the national export trophies.”
Mentioning that Bangladesh earned Taka 348 crore by exporting jute, tea and leather in fiscal 1972-73, he said, “Now, we are exporting 772 products to 199 countries to earn $ 37 billion.”
The commerce minister said the government has taken various measures to boost country’s export earnings and hoped that in 2021, the export earnings would be $ 60 billion.
Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Commerce M Tajul Islam Chowdhury and FBCCI President Safiul Islam Mahiuddin also spoke at the function chaired by Commerce Secretary Shubhashish Bose. EPB vice-chairman Bijoy Bhattacharjee gave welcome speech.
