Staff Reporter :Customs Intelligence officials and detectives in a joint drive seized five sacks of foreign currencies and 61kg gold from an apartment in the city’s Naya Paltan area on Thursday.”Acting on a tip-off, customs intelligence along with DB personnel of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) conducted the drive at the apartment in the sixth floor of the tenth storied apartment (No 29/1) around 4:00pm,” Director General of the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) Moinul Khan told The New Nation yesterday. DMP Deputy Police Commissioner (media) Masudur Rahman told reporters that the DB police recovered 528 gold bars (61kg) and five sacks full of local and foreign currencies (Tk 4 crore and Saudi riyal worth Tk 14 lakh) from the apartment at 6:30pm.During the drive, some passports were also recovered from the house, he said. However, he did not disclose the number of arrestees.Owner of the apartment Mohammad Ali told newsmen that he is a businessman and he uses this money in his business purpose.He said he has a sweetmeat shop ‘Ali Sweets’ at Dhanmondi. He also has a Hundi business.Ali also claimed that he had earned the recovered money and gold bars from the legal way.
