At least 50 people, including children and women, on Thursday fell sick after eating traditional “panta-ilish” during a Pahela Baishakh celebration programme organised by Kachua upazila administration, Bagherhat
The Bangla New Year celebration programme was arranged at the Ladies Club on the Upazila Parishad premises on Thursday morning. After a colourful rally, the participants of the rally ate panta along with hilsha fry, mashed potato and brinjal fry, said Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Kazi Mahbubur Rashid.
Nearly 300 invited guests took the meals cooked on Wednesday night, he said.
The UNO said that the food items were served by a restaurant of the upazila.
“Many of the people who ate foods fell sick from the evening. They complained of abdomen pain and dysentery after eating the foods,” said the UNO.
A total of 28 people were admitted to Kachua Upazila Health Complex, he said.
UNO Kazi Mahbubur Rashid said that a three-member investigation committee headed by an Animal Resources officer of the
Upazila had been formed.
The committee is supposed to submit a report within the next three working days, the UNO added.
Two local journalists, wife of the UNO and four policemen are also among the people undergoing treatment at the hospital.
