Another man was killed in a pre-election Union Parishad (UP) violence at Dahakula village in Alampur union under Sadar upazila of Kushtia district on Thursday morning.
The deceased was identified as Masud Karim Laltu Mollah, son of Sohrab Uddin Mollah of the village.
With this death, over 45 people have been killed so far and many injured in the widespread violence centering the UP polls.
The fourth phase UP elections is scheduled to be held on May 7.
Besides, the festive mood of the polls to the lowest tier of local government is being largely flawed by electoral irregularities and incidents of clashes between supporters of rival candidates.
Locals and police said Laltu Mollah was killed and at least 20 other people received serious wounds in a clash between the supporters of the ruling party-backed chairman aspirant and a rebel candidate.
Quoting locals, police said supporters of the incumbent chairman, Aktaruzzaman Biswas, attacked men of AL-rebel candidate Sheikh Siraj Uddin, a former chairman of the union, after they gathered in front of a tea stall in the area around 10:00am, leaving 15 people injured.
The activists of ruling party nominated candidate launched the attack on Laltu Mollah and stabbed him indiscriminately. Critically injured Laltu was rushed to Kushtia Sadr Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
As soon as the news spread, supporters of AL-rebel candidate Sheikh Siraj Uddin became furious and tried to launch counter attack on the supporters of Awami League nominated candidate Aktaruzzaman Biswas. But police foiled their agitation programme.
Victim’s family members accused Aktaruzzaman Biswas of killing Laltu Mollah and demanded his immediate arrest. Talking to reporters, Sheikh Siraj Uddin said supporters of Aktaruzzaman Biswas in a pre-planned way murdered Laltu Mollah.
“We want fair justice,” he said. Obaidul Haque, Sub-Inspector of Kushita Model Police Station, said some 15 people were arrested in this connection.
