40 patients die at SBMCH in 3- day Eid vacation

At least forty patients died at Sher-E -Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) in three days of Eid vacation including days on, before and after of Eid ul Azha.
Among the dead 40 patients, 14 were children and highest 24 died on Saturday, the Eid-day.
During these 72-hour 163 patients leaving this hospital went to other clinics or Dhaka for better treatment, 432 left the hospital getting release order and 811 patients admitted freshly, hospital sources said.
Some patients alleged that they failed to get serial on surgical operation list during this period.
In three days of Eid vacation from September 1 to 3 number of deaths were 40 i.e. average 13 per-day, were normal in this 1000-bed hospital, said Dr. SM Sirajul Islam, director SBMCH. The dead patients were severely suffering from Asthma, heart disease, and high blood pressure, admitted in critical condition and neonatal born prematurely. So medicare services during Eid vacation at SBMCH of Barisal were almost normal, he claimed.
 “Normally average 1600-1700 patients went under indoor treatments and average 17 to 20 patients became dead at this 1000 bed hospital per day.
But the number of admitted patients became decreased to 900-1100 during Eid holidays and accordingly numbers of deaths were also decreases, director SBMCH added.
SBMCH sources said 8 out of 1030 admitted patients died on Friday September 1, while 32 referred to Dhaka, 69 willingly collected release slips and 139 patients released after completion of treatment and 261 patients admitted freshly.
On Eid-day Saturday September 2, total 24 admitted 998 patients including 9 children died, 13 referred to Dhaka or other hospitals, 63 collected release slips, 139 released after completion of treatment and 207 admitted freshly.
On Sunday, day after the Eid, 8 out of 1,189 admitted patients died, 16 went to other hospitals, and 31 willingly left the hospital, 154 released after completion of treatment and 343 admitted freshly.
 However at least fifty surgical operations now became pending due to Eid vacation, hospital director acknowledged.
Hosneara Begum, a female patient admitted for gynecological complication at the hospital said she admitted two days before Eid but failed get operation serial.
Sher E Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH), sources said only 35 out of 130 registers, assistant registers, emergency, indoor and outdoor medical officers were non-Muslim and selected for performing vacation duty during Eid.
However only 10 Muslim doctors officially got leave and rest remained absent unofficially.
At least 284 out of 735 nurses of the hospital were non-Muslim and performed Eid vacation duty.
