Shitalakhya trawler capsize: 4 bodies recovered, 2 still missing

The bodies of four passengers, who went missing on nSunday night after falling off the rooftop of a capsized trawler in Shitalakhya River in Narayanganj, were recovered yesterday morning. The deceased were identified as Din Islam, 35, Imon, 22, Osman Ghani, 40, and Falan 23. All are residents of Shantinagar area of Madanganj under Bandar upazila, said Nrayanganj Naval Police Station Officer-in-Charge Newaz Uddin Ahmed.
Narayanganj firemen have recovered the bodies from the river along Tanbazar, Lobonghat and its surrounding areas around 9:00am, said Deputy Assistant Director of Narayanganj Fire Service Md Mamunur Rashid.
Two passengers are still remained missing, the fire official said.
The bodies were handed over to their relatives following a legal procedure, said Additional Superintendent of Police Md Sharfuddin.
Earlier on July 8, the trawler with 80-100 passengers was going to Madanganj Kheya Ghat from the city’s Central Kheya Ghat. The vessel hit another trawler and capsized in the river.
Police and firemen launched the rescue effort overnight, which was later suspended as no passengers were initially reported missing.
But the rescue operation resumed on Monday when relatives of three passengers reported them missing.
