Mizanur Rahman Khan, District and Session Judge of Bagerhat, in a judgment delivered on Wednesday, convicted 4 persons and sentenced them to suffer rigorous imprisonment for life on the charge of killing a van puller. The convicted persons are Enamul Molla, Zhaid Gazi, Eklas alias Asaful and Al-Amin. The judgment was delivered in absentia of Al-Amin as he has been absconding.
The prosecution story, in short, is that on February 14, 2009 in the morning van puller Zakaria Behara (17), son of one Jahangir Behara of village Sreekalash under Rampal Upazila in Bagerhat district went out of his house with his van as usual. But he did not return home. In the following morning the dead body of van puller Zakaria was found in a date tree garden on the side of Khulna-Mongla Highway under Fakirhat Upazila in the district. On February 15 Sharifa Begum, mother of the deceased van puller registered a murder case with Fakirhat PS accusing some unidentified persons.
SI Isarat Hossain of Fakirhat PS investigated into the matter and submitted a charge sheet to the court on August 13 in the same year against 6 persons who strangulated the van puller to death. During the trial of the case accused Awal was killed in a gun battle with RAB. Another accused Belal died in the jail Hajat on August 9 in the current year.
The learned judge after examining the evidences and the witnesses found the rest 4 accused guilty and awarded them the aforesaid punishment.
