10 U-turns are being launched in early 2021 to reduce traffic congestion in the capital. As a result, traffic congestion in Dhaka North will be reduced and the travel time will be saved.
3 U-turns, in the meantime, have been introduced. Another 3 will be opened on 20 December. 90 percent work of the remaining 4 U-turns projects has been completed.
The concerned people involved in the project said if these U-turns are opened, traffic congestion will be reduced by 70 percent. Working people will get back to work quickly, no need to wait on the road for hours.
According to sources, DNCC’s (Dhaka North City Corporation) then-mayor Anisul Hoque took the initiative to build 11 U-turns to reduce traffic congestion in Dhaka North area in 2015. These are – Rajalakshmi and RAB-1
offices including Jasimuddin Road, Kawla’s Flying Academy, Army Golf Club, bottom of Banani Flyover, Banani-Kakoli Railway Station, Chairman Bari, Mohakhali Flyover, Mohakhali Intercity Bus Terminal, Kohinoor Chemicals and BJ Press area.
However, the U-turns adjacent to the Army Golf Club was withdrawn in the first phase of the feasibility study. The number of U-turns stood at 10.
The project requires 31.25 bighas of roads and highways, 1.61 bighas of railways and 1.83 bighas of civil aviation land. The project was started in December 2016 and scheduled to be completed by June 2017. However, the project was extended to June 2018 as it took more than two years to get the approval. But due to various complications, the construction work was not completed even in the extended time.
Meanwhile, 3 U-turns have been opened at Rajalakshmi, RAB-1 office including Jasimuddin Road and Kawla’s Flying Academy. Another 3 U-turns will be opened in Chairman Bari, Kohinoor Chemicals and BJ Press area this month. Work on the remaining 4 is still ongoing.
Khandaker Mahabub Alam, project director and supervising engineer of DNCC, said the construction of the U-turns would be completed by December this year. Already 70 percent of the work of the project has been completed.
