At least four people were killed in the city and two others in Jhenidah district in the early hours of Monday.
Three of them were beaten to death, and one died in shootout with police in the city, while two were gunned down by unidentified miscreants in Jhenidah district.
In capital Dhaka, three unidentified youths succumbed to their injuries at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) and another in shootout. Abdul Wadud, Convener of the Sramik Dal, Mirpur 10 No. unit, arrested on Sunday morning in connection with a bomb explosion case, was killed in shootout with police in the city’s Kallyanpur area in the early hours of Monday.
Salahuddin Khan, Officer-in-Charge of Mirpur Police Station, claimed that the local people caught the three youths red-handed when they were trying to hurl petrol bombs at a running passenger bus at Sheorapara in city.
“As soon as the news spread, local people cordoned off the area and started beating them indiscriminately at about 11.30pm on Sunday. At one stage they were taken to the DMCH where they died,” the police official said.
He added that the identity of the youths could not be known instantly and a case Under Section 302/34 was filed. According to the police, based on information about accomplices and firearms, police along with Wadud went to Kallyanpur Housing area.
“As soon as the law enforcers reached the area, the miscreants started firing gunshots targeting the police. Police then opened fire in self-defence. Wadud received serious bullet wounds during the gun battle. He was later rushed to the DMCH where the attending doctor declared him dead,” the police official said.
In Jhenidah, miscreants shot dead two youths at village Defalbaria in Jhenidah Sadar upazila. The deceased have been identified as Delwar Hossain Dulal, 30, son of Nasir Uddin Biswas, and Ghulam Azam Palash, 23, son of Jhenidah Municipality Commissioner Ghulam Mostafa.
Shahabuddin Azad, Officer-in-Charge of Jhenidah Sadar police station said that they were murdered late Sunday night.
“The farmers informed the police that they saw two bodies laying on the crops field. Police later recovered the bodies from the spot at about 8am on Monday,” he said, adding none was arrested in this connection
