25km long tailback on Ctg highway

A 25-kilometre long tailback was created on Dhaka-Chittagong highway on Friday inflicting sufferings on thousands of passengers.
Absence of highway police’s monitoring, snail pace in toll collection, excessive pressure of vehicles and road accident contributed to a long gridlock on the highway.
Besides, when a local passenger bus went out of order near the Gomati Bridge it fueled the traffic chaos on the route.
Abdul Awal, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Daudkandi Highway Police Station, said the bus was removed from the spot after two hours of the accident at about 12:00noon.
According to passengers and drivers, the vehicular movement got disrupted on the busy highway leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded from Madanpur of Narayanganj district to Daudkandi upazila of Comilla district.
Hundreds of vehicles, including ambulance and government emergency service divisions’ cars, got stranded from Raipura to Gumti Bridge toll plaza on the highway, they said.
Afia Sultana Moni, a passenger of Tisha Paribahan, told The New Nation over telephone on Friday as their bus got stranded at Meghna Bridge for two hours, they failed to visit Moynamoti museum.
Kaniz Akter, inhabitant of Phulgazi upazila said that they did not see any highway police on the spot.
“Paying toll to the bridge authority is taking extra time on Dhaka-Chittagong highway everyday,” she added
Shajahan Shuvo, a US expatriate, said that he boarded on a bus of Loyal Coach Transport and the bus stopped around five spots for paying the toll.
