A court in Jessore on Tuesday sent 23 local leaders and activists of BNP and Jamaat to jail rejecting their bail prayers in two cases filed for subversive activities and carrying explosives.
According to the case statement, tipped off that a group of BNP-Jamaat men were staying in Telidhanyopura area of Bagharpara upazila in Jessore, a team of police conducted a drive there during the hartal and blockade programme enforced by the BNP-led 20-party alliance on January, 2014.
Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the BNP-Jamaat men managed to flee the scene. Later, police recovered huge firearms from the spot.
Besides, police recovered some bombs from a local BNP office in Narkelbaria Bazar during the hartal. In those connections, police filed two separate cases-one under the Explosive Act and another under the Anti-terrorism Act.
