The BNP-led 20-party alliance supports the civil society’s move for a national dialogue and formation of a national charter to resolve the ongoing political crisis.
BNP joint secretary general Salahuddin Ahmed, on behalf of the alliance, in a statement on Sunday said, they are ready to welcome such initiative. “We will welcome any initiative for a national consensus, national dialogue and formation of a national charter in a bid to hold inclusive election,” he said.
He further said that the people of all strata of society are now united to fulfill the national desire for putting the country on a solid foundation and globally recognised democratic state institution.
On February 13, ‘Concerned Citizens’, a newly-floated platform of civil society members, formed a 13-member committee, headed by former Chief Election Commissioner Dr ATM Shamsul Huda, for initiating a national dialogue among political parties to resolve the ongoing political stalemate and reach a permanent solution.
Earlier on February 9, ATM Shamsul Huda, on behalf of the civil society members, sent three separate letters to President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia requesting them to take initiative from their respective position for holding talks. The civil society members also emphasised on national consensus and formation of a national charter for permanent solution to different issues, particularity the national election.
Slahuddin Ahmed said that it is now a time-befitting demand for forming a national charter or rewriting the constitution based on the Liberation War’s spirit to finally materialise people’s hopes and expectations.
He claimed that Khaleda Zia is leading the ongoing movement with a strong desire for turning the country into a stable, democratic and developed state; not for assuming power. The BNP chief is ready to make the supreme sacrifice and face any consequence for a prosperous Bangladesh, he added.
