Two students of the Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology, Dhaka drowned and four others were still remaining untraced after they had gone for swimming on Monday in turbulent sea near the Saint Martin’s Island in the Teknaf upazila under Cox’s Bazar district.
The ill-fated drowned students are Montizul Islam Evan and Saddam Hossain while the missing students are Sabbir Hassan, Shahriar Rahman, Udoy Mahmud and Golam Rahim Bappy. All of them are the students of the Department of Computer Science of the private university, said the university authorities.
St Martin Coast Guard Station commander Lieutenant Shahid Al Hassan on Tuesday evening said that a navy team joined the search and rescue operations to rescue the missing students. The team was scouring the sea till filing the report at about 9:00 PM, but the students were not found, he said
He further said that that they had given up the hope of rescuing the missing students alive.
Officer-in-Charge of Teknaf Ranjit Kumar Barua said that a group of 34 students of the Department of the Computer Science of the private university came to the island and went into the sea for a bath on Monday afternoon. All the students had gone to the sea during low tide. At that time, five students were seen being washed away in the Bay. Later, locals and coast guard members rescued them and took them to Teknaf Hospital where the two – Evan and Saddam- died. Three others – Faisal, Farhan and Asif – were shifted to the Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital as their condition deteriorated, he added.
