Staff Reporter :
Two power generation units of Ashuganj plant in Brahmanbaria were restored to operation after 10 hours. The units were shut down after blast and fire at 3am on Wednesday night, said the plant director Sajjadur Rahman.
Unit-2 with 64 MW capacity, GT-2 unit with 56 MW capacity, Unit-3 with 150 MW and 50 MW gas engine unit were shut down immediately after the incident. Unit-3 and the gas engine unit were restored to work around 7am on Wednesday but the other two could not be put to operation until 1:30pm of the day. The technicians could not explain the reason of explosion in the central transformer at 128-KV Sub-Station’s switch yard that originated fire.
Ashuganj Fire Service Duty Officer Shahidul Islam said that oil from the exploded transformer helped fire to spread quickly.
The incident tookplace barely two weeks after the countrywide power outage on Nov 1.
The nine units of Ashuganj Power Plant were shut down after the national grid collapsed. The committee probing the incident has blamed on an ‘internal fault’ at the National Grid for the eight-hour power outage.
