Chittagong Bureau :
The coast guards have plugged an oil spill in the outer anchorage of Chittagong port, caused by a collision between two tankers.
Both tankers – Bengal Spirit-1 and Partex-3 – were pulled onto the beach early on Friday, soon after the crash, said Bangladesh Coast Guard’s East Zone Lt Commander Omar Faruk. He said Bengal Spirit-1 had started spilling diesel in the sea after the accident around 2:45am two nautical miles southwest from the Buoy No. 2 on the outer anchorage.
A Coast Guard patrol team had responded immediately, he said. After pulling both tankers near the beach, 80,000 litres of diesel were moved from the damaged ship with the help of their vessel ‘Touhid’, preventing further spill, Lt Commander Faruk said.
He added legal action would be taken against both oil tankers.
