2 JMB men to die for killing a police source

Court Correspondent :A Dhaka court yesterday (Wednesday) sentenced two members of the banned Islamist militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to death for killing a police informer in 2006. Judge ABM Nizamul Haque of Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 of Dhaka passed the order in presence of the convicts after examining the records and the depositions of 16 witnesses.The convicts are Saiful Islam alias Russel, 29, son of late Kamal Uddin of Forazibanda under Bandar Police Station in Narayanganj district and Abdur Rahman alias Fahad Alal, 31, son of late Mokhlesur Rahman from Binodnagar under Nawabganj upazila in Dinajpur district.The brief prosecution story says that the two JMB men opened fire on law enforcers, leaving two policemen and a source injured on December 29 in 2006 when a team of police tried to stop a bus on the Dhaka-Uttarbanga highway under Tangail Sadar upazila following a tip-off that huge quantity of firearms were being taken to Dhaka from Meherpur.Later, police source identified as Joynal Abedin, son of late Lal Mia from Kabila Monirpur under Burichong upazila in Comilla district, died at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital under treatment on January 13 in 2007. But Police Inspector Md Abdur Rab and Constable Siraj survived. The Police arrested the two JMB activists for their involvement in the incident.A case was filed with Tangail Police Station in connection with the incident. On July 4 in 2007, Inspector (CID) Sankar Chandra Das submitted the charge sheet of the against the JMB activists. Later, the case was transferred to the Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 of Dhaka for quick trial.
