2 ‘criminals’ hurt in Laxmipur ‘shootout’

Two suspected criminals suffered bullet injures in a reported shootout with police at Balaishpur in Sadar upazila early Saturday.
The victims were identified as Kiron Hossain, joint secretary of Dakkhin Hamsadi union unit Jubo Dal and son of Joynal Abedin of Jahanabad village, and Maidul Islam Rubel, an activist of local
unit Jubo League and son of Ruhul Amin of Basudouhida village in the upazila.
Police sources said, police arrested the two accused Maidul and Kiron from separate parts of sadar upazila on Friday afternoon.
On Friday night, police along with the two accused conducted a drive in Balaishpur area for recovering arms.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, associates of Maidul and Kiron opened fire to police, prompting the police force to retaliate, triggering a gunfight in the dead of night.
Police fired 25 rounds of bullet during the incident.
Kiron and Maidul were caught in the line of fire and received bullet injuries. Later, they were rushed to sadar hospital. One LG gun and five rounds of bullet were recovered from the scene. Shah Mizan Shafiur Rahman, superintendent of Laxmipur police, said Kiron and Maidul were wanted in several cases. Kiron was a member of notorious ‘Laden Bahini’ while Maidul of ‘Nasir Bahini’. Three policemen were injured during the incident, said the police sources.
