2 BGB men bullet-hit in ‘gunfight’ with smugglers

At least two members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) were injured in a gunfight with Yaba smugglers at Teknaf upazila in the district on Sunday morning. Besides, The BGB-42 men arrested a bullet-hit Myanmar citizen Yaba smuggler during the gunfight. They also seized a total of 96,000 pieces of Yaba tablets from the smugglers` possession. The gunfight took place in Bangladesh-Myanmar boarder area near Naf River’s Arai Number Switch Gate at Teknaf at around 7:00am. The injured BGB men are Habibur Rahman, a Teknaf Sadar BOP (border observation post) soldier, and Lutfore, a Habildar. They have been rushed to Teknaf Health Complex. On the other hand, the Myanmar citizen Yaba smuggler is Riajul Islam, 20, son of late Sultan Ahmed of Kaiukkhali para under Mangdu in Myanmar. He has been first admitted to Teknaf Health Complex. Later, on-duty doctors sifted him to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital as his condition was deteriorating. Teknaf BGB-42 Commander Lieutenant Colonel Abu Jar Al Jahid told risingbd.com that BGB men went to the area as they have the secret information of Yaba smuggling. The smugglers started firing sensing the presence of BGB men and the BGB men also started counter firing for self defense. At one stage two BGB men receive bullet injuries, he claimed. “Riajul was bringing the huge amount of Yaba tablets for one Md Gafur son of Nurul Islam of Moulvipara at Teknaf upazila,” he said.
