16 extrajudicial killings in last month alone

A total of 16 extrajudicial killings occurred in the country during the month of April this year by the law enforcement agencies, according to the monthly bulletin of Ain o Salish Kendra, a Dhaka-based Human Rights watchdog.It said a total of 66 people were reportedly picked up by members of the law enforcement agencies during January-April period, while 315 incidents of political violence occurred during the period, leaving 98 people dead and 4,336 injured.The Human Rights body asked the government to acknowledge immediately the incidents of extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances and come up with a clear commitment to make them accountable.It also revealed violence against the Hindu and other minorities, saying 45 homes were destroyed or set on fire in April while 23 temples, monasteries and statues of the minority community were destroyed during the month.Ain O Salish Kendra further said that the government should provide a time-bound commitment to bring legal reforms to address those Human Rights violations.The Human Rights organization recommended for establishing an independent commission to ensure transparent and accountable investigation and prosecution of alleged Human Rights violations by the state as well as non-state actors.The bulletin said the government should promise to initiate both criminal and departmental proceedings immediately after the allegation of Human Rights violation by the law enforcing agencies.
