14,255 hectares brought under jute cultivation

A total of 14,255 hectares of land of all the seven upazilas in the district were brought under jute cultivation during the current season with the production target of 1,56,232 bales of jute.
Of the total, some 1,190 hectares of land have been brought under the cultivation in Sadar upazila, 640 in Sadullapur, 220 in Palashbari, 1,235 in Gobindaganj, 4,360 in Sundarganj, 2,860 in Saghata and 3750 in Fulchhari upazila of the district, Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources said.
To make the cultivation a grand success, the BADC sold high quality seed like O-9897, O-72 and JRO-524 among the farmers through their recognized dealers and three sale centres located at Sadar, Gobindaganj and Palashbari upazila headquarters, said Mazharul Islam, senior assistant director of BADC.
Besides, the department of jute under the Ministry of Jute and Textile also distributed 7,840-kg of high quality jute seed among 7,000 farmers in the district last month, said M. Majedul Islam, Sadar upazila jute development officer.
The DAE has also taken up necessary measures for growers’ training, easy availability of fertilizers, pesticides and other agri inputs at fair prices to help the farmers boost production of the crop, said district training officer of DAE M. Aminul Islam.M. Momtaz Uddin Bepari, a farmer of Sreepur union of Sundarganj upazila, said the jute plants which had grown well in the field, were giving the growers expectation to get desires output against the crop.
