Bangladesh on Thursday recorded another big jump in coronavirus cases in single day detecting 1,041 new patients in the last 24 hours, raising the total cases to 18,863.
During the period, 14 more people died from COVID-19 disease, increasing the death tally to 283. Additional Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Prof Dr Nasima Sultana came up with the disclosure in its daily online briefing.
“Of the deceased, 11 are males and three females. Nine of them resided in Dhaka and five in Chattogram. Five of them were above 50,” Additional Director General of Health Directorate Professor Dr Nasima Sultana made the disclosure.
In terms of their ages, two were between 71 and 80, five between 51 and 60, five more between 41 and 50, one between 31 and 40 while the other was between 21 and 30 years old, according to government data.
“Some 7,837 samples were collected in last 24 hours and 7,392 samples were tested in 41 coronavirus testing laboratories across the country. A total of 1,51,930 samples had been tested so far in the country,” Dr Nasima added.
Currently, 46,014 people are quarantined across the country – including 3,031 newly-quarantined individuals. A total of 184,659 people have completed their quarantine course.
Nasima Sultana said, “The authorities placed 201 new individuals suspected of having Covid-19 into isolation, bringing the total to 2,570 after 1,398 left.”
“The country is capable of accommodating 8,634 people at 601 isolation wards and 31,165 people at 617 institutional quarantine facilities,” she added infected patients in the country.
As many as 5,217,058 hotline health services were given by 15,741 trained and 4,085 volunteer doctors through three designated numbers, including 151,502 in last 24-hour till 8am today.
Till date, a total of 685,907 thermal screenings were conducted at different ports, including 1082 at airports, 46 at seaports and 173 at land ports in the last 24 hours. Personal protective equipment (PPE) collected by the government has been 2,212,339, of which 1,840,946 were distributed and 371,393 were left in store.
As of May 14, the recovery rate against the number of infections is 19.10 percent while the death rate is 1.5 percent.
The virus has killed 298,322 people globally and infected 4,442,466 so far.
