10 cops hurt in clash with Shibir in Sylhet

At least 10 policemen were injured in a clash with the activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir, pro-Jamaat-e-Islami student organisation, at Uttar Kathaltali village in Barlekha upazila on Sunday night.Police and locals said a group of Shibir activists, numbering 15-20, were holding a meeting at a house at Uttar Kathaltali village around 9:00pm.On information, local leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) confined them there and informed police.When a team from Barlekha Police Station rushed to the spot, the Shibir men through loudspeaker of the local mosque announced that a robber gang entered the village.The Shibir men threw brick chips at policemen, leaving 10 policemen, including Sub-Inspector Qazi Ziauddin, injured.Police brought the situation under control by firing 10 rounds of bullet.Later, police detained five Shibir men-Abdul Ahad, 22, Delwar, 24, Nizam, 28, Saik, 25, and Shah Alam, 18, — from the spot.Officer-in-Charge of Barlekha Police Station Abul Hossain said Shibir men gathered at the house to plan subversive activities in the area.
